Imagine what it would be like to be in the GPO during the 1916 Rising

Easter Rising: Voice of a Rebel transports the viewer back in time to the heart of the heart of the action thanks to the latest Virtual Reality technology.

We are proud to announce that Guth Gafa will be the first film festival in Ireland to host a pop- up Virtual Reality cinema.

The Guth Gafa VRroom will show a selection of the latest groundbreaking short documentaries in eight individual viewing stations.

Users can travel back in time to Dublin with Willie McNieve, who was 19 at the time of the Rising, or experience what it is like to be a 12-year-old girl in a Syrian refugee camp or a young man with Cerebral Palsy, navigating the world in a wheelchair.

It’s a first for Ireland and a first for us!

Willie was a member of the Irish Republican Brotherhood and feeling deeply that Ireland should be free to be its own independent democratic republic, to spent six days in the GPO during Ireland’s bloody insurrection against British rule.

The VR experience makes uses of McNieve’s recording of this period, with the voice of Game of Thrones actor, Liam Cunningham, and presents an artistic journey into the memory of an ordinary man who was swept up in an extraordinary event.
