We are delighted to announce that the 11th Guth Gafa International Documentary Film Festival will take place over the August Bank Holiday weekend, 4-7 August 2017.
For the past ten years, the tiny team behind Ireland’s only independent documentary film festival, has strived to bring, not just the best documentary films in the world, but the award-winning directors who make them, to a rural Irish audience.
The festival, which had its roots in County Donegal, has for the past three years been taking place at the magnificent Headfort school and grounds outside the historic town of Kells in Ireland’s Ancient East.
Again this year, over the course of a long weekend, this special place, less than an hour from Dublin, will be transformed into a festival village, complete with state-of-the-art cinemas, lively discussions, master classes and workshops, as well as on-site music, food and beverages.
Besides its spectacular location and atmosphere, what sets Guth Gafa apart from other festivals is that practically all the filmmakers are in attendance to discuss their work and explore the beautiful surroundings.
As the reputation of Guth Gafa continues to grow, both at home and internationally, numbers attending the festival have been rising steadily, year on year.
Guth Gafa, meaning captive voice, is primarily about delivering films that speak out for those who cannot. With programming for this year’s festival already underway, we have seen some great films which we are very excited to be able invite to Guth Gafa.
Our festival operates on a tiny budget, and could never happen without the continued and precious support of the growing Guth Gafa community, at home and abroad; the Trojan volunteers who give of their time and labour and the people of Kells who have embraced this event and helped make it the success that it is.
We are also deeply appreciative of the funders who row in behind Guth Gafa each year, ensuring that the show goes on!
