Guth Gafa 2010 German Programme

03/06/10

Insights and intimate stories: Two German documentaries, Adrian's Dream and Autumn Gold, and an animation programme, Tricks for Kids from Berlin at Guth Gafa 2010.

Once again Guth Gafa International Documentary Film Festival transforms the picturesque seaside village of Gortahork in the heart of the Donegal Gaeltacht into a film mecca for huge numbers of international and Irish film fans over three event-packed days from 11th to 13th June.

With 30 quality international and Irish feature and short documentaries, the 5th annual Guth Gafa Festival selection once again promises a very rich and varied programme.

This year, supported by the Goethe Institut Irland, Guth Gafa presents two excellent German films, with their directors in attendance, and the special children's programme Tricks for Kids by Kuki and Interfilm – International Short Film Festival Berlin.

Guth Gafa Film Festival is proud to present the World Premiere of Adrian’s Dream by Manuel Fenn. Since very early childhood, Adrian has wanted to be a ballet star. However, the training at the elite State Ballet School of Berlin (Germany) is hard and Adrian's father, who works on a construction site, cannot identify with the goals of his only son. For eight years, from childhood to the end of puberty, Manuel Fenn has accompanied Adrian along what is often a difficult path. Any similarities to Billy Elliott are by pure chance. Adrian’s Dream will have its German premiere at Münchner Filmfest (Munich) by the end of June 2010.

The internationally award-winning documentary Autumn Gold (Germany, 2010) by Jan Tenhaven tells the life-affirming stories of five senior athletes between 80 and 100 years old across the world who all have one goal – to take part in the track and field World Masters Championships. Autumn Gold has won the Hot Docs 2010 Filmmaker Award and was voted #4 in the Top Ten Audience Favourites (Toronto International Documentary Festival). The film also has been screened at various German Festivals including Filmkunstfest Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, DOKfest München and Internationales Filmfest Emden-Norderney.

Alongside the official screenings will be a special family programme, with a selection of documentaries as well as art and music workshops for children – and a free Crèche.

One of this year’s family specials is the animated shorts series Tricks for Kids presented by Kuki and Interfilm – International Short Film Festival Berlin. The animated shorts without dialogues by Heinz Hermanns and Alex Stein are telling adventurous stories using many different animations techniques. A chicken family lost their baby, an egg helps his friends, a paper dog has problems with his tail, a frog falls in love, a little flower fights with a monster, a stork is having a duel with a little bird and much more.

Guth Gafa International Documentary Film Festival is proudly supported by Bord Scannán na hÉireann, IFTN, RTÉ, The Arts Council, TG4, The Radharc Trust, Screen Producers Ireland, Údarás na Gaeltachta, FÁS/STI, The Broadcast Authority of Ireland, Goethe-Institute Dublin, Óstán Loch Altan, Donegal County Council, Fáilte Ireland, Ealaín na Gaeltacht and other industry partners.
