Festival Film Programme Finalised

25/05/10

Guth Gafa have finalised their programme for their 5th Festival which opens on Friday 11th June.  17 award-winning films from around the world are featured in the international programme, alongside 6 Irish features and 4 shorts, plus 2 international films aimed at a family audience, and a number of special side-bar events also feature international and Irish films, making a total of 32 long and short documentaries for Guth Gafa 2010

The international programme features films from 12 European countries, USA, Australia and Iceland, and almost all of the films are Irish premieres, and multi award-winning works.  One of the unique aspects of Guth Gafa's programme is that all the directors of selected films are expected to attend, and this year Guth Gafa have confirmed the attendance of directors for all but 3 of their films, which means 29 European and Irish directors will be in Gortahork for the weekend of screenings, and will take part in post-screening discussions about their work.

Of special interest to documentary lovers will be the Kim Longinotto mini-retrospective, featuring 2 of Kim's earlier films, Divorce Iranian Style (1998) and Pride of Place (1976), a film she completed while still a student at The National Film School in the UK. Kim Longinotto will also host the Guth Gafa FÁS/STI Masterclass on Sunday 13th.

A special family-oriented programme includes P-Star Rising, a remarkable film about a 9 year old girl pushed into a career as a rap star by her failed musician father, and for younger children, Tricks for Kids, a programme of charming and funny animations withoiut dialogue from around the world.

Finally, a side-bar event called Ulster Scots on Film will give Guth Gafa visitors a chance to see 2 films made about characters from the Ulster Scots communities both in Northern Ireland and in Donegal.  Deaglan Ó Mochain's The Hamely Tongue: Cultúr Ceilte (2009) and Lionel Mills' Us Boys (1999) will screen together on Friday afternoon, and will be followed by a post-screening discussion with Laura Spence, BBC Producer, Ulster Scots Programming, and Jim Millar, Director of Education at The Ulster Scots Agency in Belfast.

The full Guth Gafa programme is now available to view online on our Film page, and online booking for films is now open on the page of each individual film, or on the Bookings page.
