FILMS ARE MADE TO BE SEEN! – New distribution opportunity for Irish Films

30/11/09

Guth Gafa International Documentary Film Festival have partnered with Soilsiú Films in Donegal and OnlineFilm AG in Germany in a new online distribution venture, to provide a great opportunity for Irish producers to distribute their films and get them more widely seen.

OnlineFilm AG is one of the largest filmmaker-owned distribution websites in Europe, where filmmakers can present their work independently to the viewers for a fair price.  It’s a multilingual platform distributing films straight to the audience. It’s the place for everyone offering or looking for films.  Any film, any genre, any length can be uploaded, provided the filmmakers own the copyright, and it is copyright cleared.

Soilsiú Films have developed an Irish portal (http://ireland.onlinefilm.org/) which will run alongside the main OnlineFilm AG website, and this portal is set up exclusively to market and promote the Irish films.

Irish filmmakers are able to upload as many films as they would like to distribute, or, for no cost at all, during the pilot phase of the project, Soilsiú Films will set up an account and upload their first film for them.

Soilsiú Films will also translate a selection of uploaded films into Irish since OnlineFilm AG offers bilingual sites with English and 10 different European languages.

Filmmakers can charge any price for their films, most charge between €3 and €10 per download, and will receive 51% of all revenue from download sales – the other 49% remains in the OnlineFilm AG organisation to fund the infrastructure of the website and organisation.

The Online Film project is funded by the MEDIA programme.

In parallel with the OnlineFilm distribution project, Soilsiú and Guth Gafa are also developing a pilot online Educational Film website, where, for a limited period, certain films with Irish curriculum relevance will be offered as a download free of charge to select focus groups of teachers and academics in the educational sector.  Soilsiú will commission Study Guides (teaching packs) for these films, and the films and study guides will be available as downloads.

If any filmmakers feel they have a title that would be appropriate for this pilot project, they should contact David Rane, Managing Director of Soilsiú.

The Online Film project is funded by MEDIA, and Soilsiú Films have further funding for the development of the project through Enterprise Ireland’s innovation Voucher scheme, and they are collaborating with DKIT on further research and development of the project.

For more information on the project and how to upload your films, please check out the OnlineFilm Ireland website, http://ireland.onlinefilm.org or call 074 9180730
